Nexans, a global leader in the design and manufacturing of cable systems and services, specializing in the offshore wind sector and subsea interconnectors, has completed the repair of the Estlink 2 interconnector under contract for Fingrid, Finland’s transmission system operator. The successful operation reinstates one of the Baltic region’s most important electricity links.

The interconnector was damaged in December 2024, prompting an urgent need for investigation and repair. Nexans began supporting Fingrid immediately—mobilizing its dedicated IMR and engineering teams early in 2025. The offshore repair operation was executed in May.

A specially equipped vessel was rapidly mobilized, carrying a full spread of jointing equipment, test tools, and spare materials—including critical stock transferred from Fingrid’s depots to Nexans’ facility in Halden, Norway. All components were thoroughly reviewed and tested to ensure readiness. The offshore campaign, which involved replacing a one-kilometer section of cable, was completed safely and on schedule—with full alignment between Nexans’ technical execution and Fingrid’s operational requirements.

“This successful repair demonstrates our readiness and capability to respond fast and deliver—where it matters most,” said Pascal Radue, EVP of Nexans’ Power Transmission Business Group. “Nexans leads the world in high-voltage subsea IMR because we combine deep technical expertise with operational discipline, integrated systems thinking, and a track record of execution. From planning to offshore jointing, we know what it takes to get critical infrastructure back online—safely, reliably, and on time.”

“We appreciate Nexans’ strong commitment and technical expertise throughout the planning and execution of this repair,” said Kimmo Nepola, Unit Manager at Fingrid. “The interconnector plays a key role in maintaining security of supply and energy cooperation in the region. Together, we’ve ensured that Estlink 2 can return to operation safely and on schedule.”

The Estlink 2 interconnector enables electricity exchange between Finland and Estonia and plays a vital role in regional energy integration. Commissioned in 2014, the 650 MW link includes 145 kilometers of subsea cable manufactured by Nexans.

This project further underlines Nexans’ strategic focus on IMR services—ensuring the reliability, resilience, and security of subsea cable infrastructure as demand for clean and interconnected energy systems grows globally.
