Innovation at the heart of sustainable electrification

At Nexans, innovation means responding, concretely, durably, and at scale, to the challenges posed by the global energy transition. From our research laboratories to our production lines, every technological advance serves a clear ambition: building the electrical networks of tomorrow while reducing the environmental impact of today.

Nexans Calais EHV Laboratory

Four priorities to power the world of tomorrow

To deliver on our strategy as a pure player in sustainable electrification, Nexans has structured its R&D work around four core priorities:

  • Powering the world with electricity. Developing transmission and distribution solutions capable of meeting rapidly growing global energy demand, driven by the expansion of renewable energy sources and emerging electrical uses.
  • Ensuring network reliability. Designing technologies that prevent failures, reduce the risk of blackouts, and secure critical infrastructure โ€” from urban distribution grids to high-voltage submarine interconnections.
  • Reducing environmental footprint. Integrating lower-impact materials from the design stage, measuring and publishing the environmental data of our products, and limiting carbon emissions across the entire product lifecycle.
  • Optimizing the competitiveness of our solutions. Delivering high-performance, customizable, and cost-effective products designed to reduce the total cost of ownership for our clients and partners.

In 2022, to translate these ambitions into action, Nexans invested nearly โ‚ฌ20 million in the modernization of its global R&D hub: AmpaCity, in Lyon, France. In 2025, the Group took another major step with the inauguration of Stella Nova, its center of excellence dedicated to breakthrough technologies, in Hanover, Germany.

Two centers of excellence driving innovation

Nexans organizes its R&D capabilities around complementary sites, each dedicated to distinct and strategically important technological domains.

AmpaCity: the laboratory of decarbonized electrification

Spanning 4,500 mยฒ of state-of-the-art laboratories, AmpaCity brings together around one hundred international experts, engineers, researchers and technicians, from ten different nationalities. This is where Nexans designs the electrical solutions that will power the networks, buildings and industries of tomorrow.

Nexans AmpaCity

DC microgrid demonstrator

AmpaCity is evolving into a full-scale demonstrator for direct current (DC) electrical architectures, serving tertiary buildings, data centers and high-availability infrastructure. DC reduces conversion losses, facilitates the integration of renewable energy sources and storage systems, and natively meets the needs of modern DC loads. By turning AmpaCity into a living laboratory, Nexans positions itself at the forefront of this architectural transition, alongside its clients and industrial partners.

low carbon program

Sustainable and low-carbon materials

AmpaCity is the scientific engine behind Nexans’ Low-Carbon Program: teams develop formulations integrating recycled metals, copper and aluminum first, capable of reducing cable carbon emissions by up to 40%, with no compromise on technical performance. This work supports the Group’s commitment to achieving 25% recycled content across its products by 2028, producing copper wire rod from 100% recycled materials. All environmental data is verified by independent third parties and published as PEPยฎ (Product Environmental Profile) declarations, accessible directly from online product sheets.

Tests on standard and fire safety cables at Nexans AmpaCity

Fire safety

As electrical installations in buildings grow denser, AmpaCity develops cables and systems that limit flame spread, reduce toxic smoke emissions, and keep critical equipment operational, smoke detectors, emergency lighting, extraction systems, in the event of a fire. The stakes are high: in Europe, a building fire breaks out every 30 seconds, and more than one in four are caused by electrical faults.

High-performance electrical insulation

Optimizing dielectric properties for cables used in high and extra-high voltage applications, at the core of major energy transmission projects.

Digital network monitoring

Developing intelligent real-time monitoring solutions to anticipate failures, optimize electrical flow management, and extend the service life of infrastructure, digital technology in the service of network resilience.

Stella Nova: the center of excellence for breakthrough technologies

Inaugurated in June 2025 on the Panattoni Campus in Hanover, Germany, Stella Nova is Nexans’ new centre of excellence dedicated to next-generation electrical technologies. Across 9,000 mยฒ, more than 70 experts in engineering, research and manufacturing work across three strategic domains.

Superconducting cable

Superconductivity and fault current limiters

Nexans develops superconducting cable systems capable of carrying up to ten times more power than conventional cables, with near-zero energy loss and a significantly reduced physical footprint. A world-first was unveiled at the inauguration: a demonstration bench showcasing low-voltage AC and DC superconducting cables designed to meet the massive power demands of next-generation hyperscale data centers. By 2030, global electricity consumption from data centers could account for up to 10% of total energy demand, Nexans is positioning itself today to meet this challenge.

Cryogenic systems

Stella Nova houses development and testing capabilities for cryogenic fluid transfer lines, including liquid hydrogen, a central challenge in industrial decarbonization.

UNIcross closeup welding - Uniwema

High-precision forming and welding machines

Advanced solutions for the energy and industrial sectors, supporting the reliability and performance of electrical installations.

Stella Nova also integrates a state-of-the-art high-voltage laboratory dedicated to testing conventional and superconducting cables, fault current limiters, and superconducting components. This site embodies Nexans’ long-term vision: industrializing breakthrough technologies to accelerate the global energy transition.

R&D at Nexans AmpaCity

From R&D to industry: innovation deployed at global scale

The true value of an innovation lies in its ability to move from the laboratory into the real world. With more than 60 manufacturing and service sites worldwide, Nexans has a unique industrial capacity to move rapidly from proof of concept to full-scale production.

It is in these facilities that advances developed at AmpaCity and Stella Nova are tested under real-world conditions, refined, and integrated into our product catalogue. Today, 70% of Nexans cables sold are covered by PEPยฎ environmental declarations verified by independent third parties, enabling clients to base purchasing decisions and infrastructure projects on reliable, comparable carbon data.

This close alignment between research, manufacturing and environmental transparency makes Nexans a trusted partner for major electrification projects across Europe and around the world.
