- New 53-metre HV tower strengthens Nexans’ capability to manufacture next-generation 525 kV land cables.
- Part of Nexans’ โฌ90 million investment program supporting Europe’s energy transition and grid expansion.
- Charleroi site set to play a key role in delivering infrastructure essential to Europe’s electrified future.
Nexans today inaugurated a new 53-metre high-voltage tower at its Charleroi facility in Belgium, marking a major milestone in the Group’s investment program to expand its European high-voltage manufacturing footprint and support the growing demand for power transmission infrastructure across Europe.
The new facility strengthens Nexansโ capacity to manufacture next-generation HV land cables, supporting the industrialization of 525 kV HVDC cable systems with copper conductors of up to 3,000 mmยฒ, while building readiness for future HVAC cable systems with aluminium conductors of up to 3,500 mmยฒ. These advanced cable systems are designed to efficiently transmit large volumes of electricity over long distances, helping connect renewable energy sources to consumers and reinforcing Europe’s electricity networks. While largely invisible to consumers, high-voltage cable systems are among the essential infrastructures enabling Europe’s transition to a more electrified future.
The inauguration is part of the โฌ90 million investment program announced in 2024 to support offshore wind development and major grid interconnection projects across Europe, by expanding Nexansโ capacity to manufacture high-voltage land cable systems that connect these projects to onshore transmission networks. The investment covers the new tower in Charleroi, upgrades to manufacturing and testing capabilities, and increased production capacity for advanced HV technologies.
Every new renewable energy source, interconnector and grid upgrade relies on robust transmission infrastructure. With this investment in Charleroi, Nexans is strengthening its capacity to manufacture advanced high-voltage land cable systems โ supporting the onshore transmission networks that connect renewable generation and interconnectors across Europe โ and building on the expertise and commitment of our teams.
Senior Executive Vice President PWR-Transmission, Nexans
The Charleroi facility has played a key role in high-voltage cable manufacturing for more than a century and remains an important part of Nexans’ European industrial footprint. The new tower further strengthens the site’s strategic role in delivering high-performance 525 kV solutions for transmission system operators and major infrastructure projects across Europe.
Beyond manufacturing capability, the project supports Nexans’ sustainability ambitions. On the delivery of major projects, the site is positioned to benefit from multimodal transport links via the Sambre waterway, enabling reduction in transport-related COโ emissions compared with equivalent road-only transport solutions.
Building the energy system of tomorrow requires long-term investment in both technology and industrial capacity. With the new tower in Charleroi, Nexans is reinforcing its ability to support Europeโs electrification at scale and its transition towards a more resilient, low-carbon energy future. This is a further milestone in our journey as a pure player in sustainable electrification.
CEO, Nexans
