About the project

Skagerrak 4 is a joint project between the two transmission system operators in Norway and Denmark, Statnett and Energinet.dk. The interconnector facilitates more renewable energy production in both countries and benefit consumers and the industry amongst others through more stable power prices and increased security of power supply.

With this project completed there are now four DC connections between Norway and Denmark, Skagerrak, 1-3, with a total capacity of 1 000 megawatts (MW). Nexans has manufactured and installed all of them. The first two Skagerrak cables were installed in 1976 as the very first subsea cable project between countries.

The new Skagerrak 4- interconnection has a capacity of 700 MW, which increased the capacity of the connectionnby 70 percent to 1700 MW. 700 MW is roughly equivalent to the capacity of two large power plants.

Nexans' solution

For Skagerrak 4, Nexans provided a 137 km HVDC offshore cable and 12 km onshore cable in Norway.
