Scottish households to be powered by 2019
of onshore and offshore cables
of energy from 86 wind turbines
In the framework of the major expansion of the Beatrice Windfarm, Nexans will connect 84 new offshore turbines to the Scottish mainland. The project will add 588 MW of installed wind capacity to its network, enough to meet the energy needs of 450,000 Scottish households.
The wind is fast and fierce off the northern coast of Scotland. It helps to make the United Kingdom one of the world’s top producers of wind power, generating 11.5% of the country’s total energy production. To further increase the share of renewable energy in the UK’s energy mix, Nexans cables will bring an additional 588 MW of wind power to the Scottish grid as part of the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm project.
Beatrice, one of the kind offshore windfarm
The Beatrice Offshore Windfarm was the first of its kind in Scotland when it began operation in 2007. Initially comprised of two 5-megawatt wind turbines, the project was intended to test the feasibility of developing a full-scale wind farm off the Scottish coast.
In 2016, SSE Renewables Ltd., SDIC Power of China and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners agreed to expand the energy facility to 84 individual turbines, which collectively will increase generating capacity almost six-fold.
The partners awarded Nexans and Siemens a contract to develop a transmission system between the Beatrice Offshore Windfarm and the mainland. In the fall of 2017, we began laying two high-voltage export circuits, totaling 260 kilometers in onshore and offshore cables.

Leading in wind energy technology to meet growing demand for energy
Nexans has repeatedly proven itself a leader in wind energy technology with more than 15 years of experience.
The ongoing endeavor adds to the more than 2,600 megawatts of energy from offshore wind farms that Nexans has integrated into power grids around the globe. Nexans cables will eventually relay enough energy to meet the needs of 450,000 Scottish households. In the coming years, we will continue to lead the way in the world’s energy transition by connecting renewable sources and consumers.
