About the project
Red Eléctrica de España awards Nexans with a turnkey contract worth around 50M Euros to manufacture and install an interconnection cable between Majorca and Menorca. The interconnection project will strengthen the security and quality of supply on both islands and will allow greater integration of renewable energy under safe conditions for the system and greater efficiency of the interconnected systems.
- The turnkey contract worth around 50 million euros covers engineering, design, supply, installation, and testing of the interconnection.
- The contract was awarded and approved only 20 days after the Spanish Council of Ministers granted the administrative authorization for construction to Red Eléctrica and declared it as a public utility project.

Nexans' solutions
The new underground and subsea 132 kV power cables, which will link up Majorca and Menorca, will be 68 kilometers in length and will be laid on the seabed at a maximum depth of 81 meters.
Nexans will produce and install 41 km submarine cable 145 kV 3x1x500 mm2 Al with integrated 2xFO (48 fibers each) incl 1.5 km subsea landfall cable 3x1x800 mm2 Al, and 29 km land cable 1x1000mm2 Al with 2 x 29 km Fiber optical cables in the screen.
The subsea cable will be manufactured by Nexans Norway in its Halden facility while the underground cable will be produced by Nexans Benelux in Charleroi, Belgium. The fiber optic element will be delivered by Nexans Norway’s specialized unit in Rognan.
The installation of the interconnector will be carried out using the specialized cable-laying vessel, C/S Nexans Skagerrak.
