Nexans supports SCIP for enhanced transparency on substances in articlesSep 8, 2021
What is SCIP ?
SCIP is the database for information on Substances of Concern In articles as such or in complex objects (Products) established under the European Waste Framework Directive (WFD).
From January 05th 2021, companies supplying articles containing substances of very high concern (SVHC) included in the REACh Candidate List in quantities exceeding 0.1% weight by weight on the European market must submit information on these articles to the European Chemical Agency (ECHA).
What are the benefits of SCIP ?
The SCIP database ensures that information on articles containing SVHC are communicated through the whole product life until the waste stage.
Nexans fully supports this new requirement aiming at providing transparency to customers and waste operators for safe handling, and increasing authorities information on substances in articles.
Nexans also produces its best efforts in reducing hazardous substances in products by pushing for their substitutions, improving waste treatment operations and thus contributing to a more circular economy by generating reliable recycled materials.
What is Nexans contribution ?
Despite few national transpositions less stringent than the European ambition, Nexans is fully committed to submit all the notifications into the SCIP database. Nexans SCIP numbers are communicated to all our customers on request, allowing them to benefit for simplified SCIP notifications for their own products and systems.
Nexans’ products comply with laws on chemicals substances. Although the European Commission set very short deadlines, Nexans has submitted all the required notifications into the SCIP database by January 5th, 2021 and commits to maintain the data related to those notifications and to submit new required notifications if any.
Meanwhile, the Group continues its strict monitoring of the composition of raw materials used to manufacture its products. Substances included in the REACh Candidate List are banned in new developments in Europe even if their use is still legally allowed. Nexans also anticipates future restriction by identifying substances currently assessed at the European level and by participating in European consultation processes.
