Nexans Foundation: Emergency in Nepal with the NPO “Un Enfant par la Main”
Our Foundation has just given its support to the NPO "Un Enfant par la Main" (A Child by the Hand) for its project of housing reconstruction in Nepal, hit by two earthquakes on April 25 and May 12, 2015. Un Enfant par la Main has indeed decided to support its partner ChildFund in Nepal. The latest report of June 17, directed by the Ministry of Interior of Nepal states: 8,792 deaths including 2,277 children, 22,311 injured, over 500,000 houses destroyed and nearly 281,200 houses damaged. According to the UN, despite international humanitarian aid, 2.8 million people need assistance for food, shelter or medical care.
To best meet the immediate needs of the victims of this disaster, Un Enfant par la Main and ChildFund Alliance’s partners provided tarpaulins protective canvas (12mx18m) to 2,688 homes, floor mats to 3,111 homes and have distributed food twice.
Today, it is necessary to rebuild sustainable housing for the most vulnerable households who are deprived of it and restore their access to electricity.
ChildFund Nepal is now entering the third part of this emergency: the long-term rehabilitation of the targeted communities’ infrastructure. The aim of this project is to install electricity in the reconstructed houses for 56 households (392 people) in the city of Ramechhap and connect them to the power grid of the city.
The Nexans Foundation has already supported twice the NPO "Un Enfant par la Main": in 2013 to bring electricity to six classrooms in two primary schools in Blengoua and Gonido in Mali and in 2015 to electrify the Fadiola maternity ward also in Mali.
