Nexans to supply special cables for Baggage Handling System for extension or transforming airport programs worldwide
The group will provide power and control cables for terminals of Dubai, Dublin and Doha international airports
Paris, December 16, 2009 – Nexans, the worldwide leader in the cable industry, has been awarded several contracts to supply around 400 km of special cables for the extension or transformation of terminals at Dubai (UAE), Dublin (Ireland) and Doha (Qatar) international airports. The cables will provide power and control and equip the baggage handling systems (BHS).
Nexans will supply halogen free fire-retardant power and control cables, as well as bus cables. Most of these cables will be manufactured at Nexans’ facilities in Monchengladbach and Nuremberg in Germany, and Frameries in Belgium.
“Baggage handling systems are extremely complex and the cables for these systems must adhere to strict technical and security requirements”, says Paolo Pieri, Nexans Executive Business Developer, Airport project. “They must operate at high temperatures, prevent premature cable aging and look after passenger safety in the event a fire occurs by assuring low smoke density and corrosive gases”.
Dubai Airport Terminal 3 Concourse 3
Nexans will provide to Siemens Middle East around 200 km of specialized cables for the Extension of Terminal 3 Concourse 3 at Dubai Airport. The cables will provide power and control and equip the baggage handling systems being installed at Dubai´s Airport’s new Terminal 3. The cables should be installed in 2010.
Dubai International Terminal 3 opened on October 14, 2008 for the exclusive use of Emirates. Its capacity of 43 million passengers per year expanded the airport’s overall capacity to 60 million passengers. The Terminal 3 complex includes an associated airside facility (also known as concourse 2) and an A380 dedicated airside facility (concourse 3) that is currently under construction.
Between 2005 and 2007, Nexans has already delivered 2.000 km of cables for the Baggage Handling System for the Terminal 3 and the Mega Cargo at Dubai International.
Transforming Dublin Airport program
Nexans will supply to Siemens Ireland around 100 km of power and control cables for the Transforming Dublin Airport Programs, and particularly to equip the baggage handling systems at new Terminal Two. Installation should start by the end of 2009.
Terminal Two is the centre-piece of the Transforming Dublin Airport program. Work started on T2 in October 2007 and it is scheduled to open to the public in April 2010. When the program is complete the new facilities will allow Dublin Airport to comfortably handle up to 35 million passengers per year and will create a modern airport that will be an efficient gateway to the Ireland of the 21st century.
