About the project

In 2009, Nexans was awarded a contract to manufacture and install 52 km of 170 kV HVAC export cable with fibers for the Dutch Van Oord Dredging & Marine Contractor b.v. The cable was to connect the Belwind windfarm to the Belgian power grid.

The windfarm had to become operational in 2011, and was the first phase in the Belwind Offshore Wind Park project, located 46 km off Zeebrugge, and consisting of 55 wind turbines generating 165 MW, securing power transmission to around 165,000 households in Belgium.

Nexans' solution

Nexans supplied and installed 52 km of 170 kV high voltage power export cable with an optical fibre insert to the Dutch EPC contractor, Van Oord Dredging & Marine Contractors b.v. Van Oord is the EPC contractor for the first phase of the wind farm project. The optical fibre elements were manufactured at Nexans’ factory at Rognan, Norway, while the export cable was made at the company’s factory located in Halden, Norway.

The cable connected the windfarm, comprising 55 wind turbines that generates a total of 165 MW, to the Belgian power network. The cable was laid by Nexans’ cable-laying vessel C/S Nexans Skagerrak and buried into the seabed using Nexans’ CapJet trenching system.
