Nexans built a global platform, offering a growing number of digital-based services related to cabling and network infrastructure. The inital focus is on geolocation, to be followed by operational services and eventually augmented reality.

Connected Drums’ is Nexans’ dedicated drum management platform. This digital geolocalisation solution for cable drums is based on a combination of hardware, software, services and engineering expertise. Multi-sensor GPS tracking devices affixed to drums are followed using dedicated ERP-ready web software (iOS/Android). Nexans’ unique solution enables accurate, real-time pinpointing of the location of cable drums at any moment, optimising drum management, logistics and rotation cycle time whilst preventing loss and theft of cables and drums.

To date, 7,000 drums have been equipped worldwide. The goal is to deploy solution on all drums over next three years. That’s 100,000 drums worldwide.

Why this solution?

During rollouts or upgrades, cable drums may be transported several times. They may be stored or processed in fields, construction sites, along rail tracks or sewer lines, or other out-of-the way, off-the-grid locations. This brings several requirements:

What are the benefits of Connected Drums?

  • Economic benefits

Reduction of on-site drum immobilization helps reduce cost and working capital. A dedicated portal showing the location of drums ready for pick up lowers the costs of cable drum fleet administration. Drum rotation cycle time can be reduced by 25% and users have 100% stock visibility, with accuracy down to one metre. Furthermore, alerts are sent if a drum is moved outside a defined perimeter or suspicious movement is detected (at night, for example), helping eliminate cable theft and loss.

  • Operational benefits

Excellent traceability thanks to geolocalisation and customized dashboards helps ensure drums are delivered as planned. Delivery notification is sent automatically. This technology can also be applied to items such as transformers or pylons. At the end of a project, residual and short cable lengths can be practically managed. Periodic reports are based on KPIs associated with the drum fleet and broken down by drum type, region, project and more.
