“By moving further upstream in anticipating multi-operator needs, Nexans Interface is helping telecoms ‘mutualize’ infrastructure, thus enabling the Fiber-to-the-Home revolution.”
Michel Ruffa

Mutually beneficial

In 2008 there will be massive Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) deployment in Europe, the US and Asia. Nexans Building Basement Terminals (BBTs) make it possible for telecoms to profitably share vertical fiber riser in buildings. This solution is called “mutualization.”

First come, first served

Neither building managers nor regulations allow competing telecoms to install their own vertical risers in apartment blocks and buildings to serve new subscribers. Whether a box or larger cabinet, the modular BBT receives up to four fiber cables from each telecom network, and consolidates it on a single riser belonging to the original installer. Highly adaptable

The BBT can adapt to all configurations of FTTH offered by traditional and new telecoms: multipoint, which uses splitters to serve up to 64 subscribers; and point-to-point, where each subscriber has his/her own fiber cable.

Listening, learning, lobbying

Changes to telecom regulations affecting both incumbent and competitive local exchange carriers (ILECs and CLECs) were carefully monitored. Then, using our interconnection expertise, we invested in a design and accessories which could handle technical requests, like more splitters, and the safe separation of the operator zone from the subscriber zone. Successful field trials were done, and we lobbied for technical specs. France Telecom’s support means that new carriers are now keen to install and lease BBT space and vertical risers, thus generating revenue while deploying fiber progressively.

A growing family

BBTs are a family of products which can serve from 12 to 1,000 customers. They can accommodate more splitters and excess fiber in less space. One thousand units were sold in less than four months!
