Send link to this page Your Nexans contact on this page

The official opening of NorNed, the longest undersea power cable in the world, takes place Thursday, September 11, 2008. NorNed links the power grids of Norway and Holland. Nexans has supplied the deep water element and high voltage cables.

The event will be marked simultaneously in both countries at the point where the cable comes ashore – at Feda in Norway, and Eemshaven in Holland.

Opening by Ministers
The official opening of NorNed will see Norwegian Minister for Oil and Energy Terje Riis-Johansen together with his Dutch counterpart, Maria van der Hoeven.

Joint celebrations
Statnett and TenneT will jointly celebrate the opening in Norway and Holland. Spectators at Feda can see the official opening at Eemshaven in the north of Holland on a giant flat screen.
Read more about the celebrations in Feda on Statnett's website.

About NorNed
The NorNed link between Kvinesdal in Norway and Eemshaven in the Netherlands will be the world’s longest high-voltage submarine power transmission link with its 580 kilometres.

Statnett, the Norwegian national transmission system operator and TenneT, the Dutch national transmission system operator, will each own 50 percent of the link. The NorNed link will have a maximum power capacity of 700 MW. The principal reasons for building the NorNed link are to improve electric power supply reliability in both countries and to reduce price fluctuations.

About the Nexans cable
Nexans has manufactured two 156 km deep-water cables, as well as a shorter length of cable to bring the link ashore in Norway. The two Nexans cables are 450 kV HVDC cables that are laid in water depths up to 410 m.

The entire cable quantity of 850 km was installed using Nexans’ specially-built cable ship ”C/S Skagerrak” (now "C/S Nexans Skagerrak, owned by Nexans) and protected on the sea bed by Nexans’ own underwater excavator ”Capjet”.

Nexans has given an important contribution to a successful NorNed project.
