Nexans fire-test lab supports global cable projects

Key to commercialization

Nexans Research Center (NRC, Lyon) recently obtained UL fire-test certification rights for its products from Underwriters Laboratories (UL), a safety consulting and certification company and a standard for international projects of everything from railways to energy infrastructure.

On the (UL) mark

Because certification can take up to three years, UL developed a Data Acceptance Test program, allowing customers to use their own testing facilities to win the coveted UL mark. NRC Lyon was able to meet the strict audit process requirements in a mere nine months.

Birth of a new test facility

In late 2013, Nexans decided to expand commercial opportunities for OEMs in the Middle East, especially for the rolling stock and railway infrastructure market in Qatar. The company already had a suite of cabling solutions for both sides of the business, mainly developed for European mass transit and High-Speed Trains (HST). However, the region is also covered by UL standards, and not just European ones. Within a year Nexans bought, installed, validated and certified the flame-test equipment needed to create an accredited UL test facility.

Expanding customer opportunities

As a COFRAC (French Accreditation Committee) lab, NRC (Lyon) demonstrated its technical skills and quality system to fully meet the toughest requirements, which was duly recognized by UL. For now, only UL flame tests are involved, including vertical flame tests. But the tests will soon be enlarged to include fire-propagation tests. These UL-certified tests will benefit several of our plants in Qatar, Turkey, France, Chili, Norway, Canada and the United States. Expanding certification is done on behalf of our customers who, like Nexans, do business globally.
