Blowing micro-cable straight out of the box

“Intelligently packaging micro-cables is an art in itself, and something that busy installers have come to expect."

Easy does it!

A new box solution makes blowing micro-cables easier and faster for home and apartment cable installers. A simple fold-out cardboard carton design vastly reduces the surface friction and weight of the cable compared to unrolling it from a rotating drum.

Flaps fit flawlessly

Following the wordless instructions, the small and easy-to-transport box folds out and fits together in six easy steps. The top flaps not only protect the cable, they have a hole in the center which serves as a cable guide. The box is also environmentally-friendly since it contains only one type of biodegradable material.

In-tune with installers’ needs

Installers appreciate the time-savings and the flexibility which allows for fiber cables up to 3 mm to be installed throughout an apartment building from above. Speeds are vastly increased when blowing equipment is fine-tuned to the cable.

Beating the drum

Drums, spools and bobbins are widely used in the building market. However they can be awkward, heavy and often require separate tools (e.g. a cable guiding arm). We wanted a design that would reduce weight, be entirely self-sufficient, transportable on EURO-Pallets, and easy to assemble and dispose of. The box was developed jointly by Nexans and SCA (Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget), a Swedish cardboard manufacturer. Then we tested blowing performance of various prototypes in our on-site blowing facility at Grimsås. The first 30 km of microcables have already been installed in 3.5 mm micro-ducts in Bohus.

Next step

The next step will be outdoor cables between apartment buildings through ground pipes which will be deliverable though the same handy boxes.
