Intouchables

Installed on DB’s regional lines, DuoTrack® rail-mounted copper/fiber signaling-control-telecom cables were designed to cut costs and simplify installation while assuring high reliability. They have now become “Untouchables,” foiling metal theft along Germany’s railways.

On the right track

Since DuoTrack® is in full view of passers-by, we wondered: was it vulnerable? a tempting target? Could it be easily damaged or stolen? Surprise! The situation is exactly the opposite. Experience has shown that this cable is at less risk than cables laid in concrete troughs.

Rail safe

The advantage of DuoTrack® has always been installation ease. The cable is simply and securely clamped to the rail. However, this new method means that stealing cable requires the painstaking removal of the clamps, placed at short distances from each other. This is not attractive to thieves, who need to act quickly for fear of being caught, and risk being hit by a train. By comparison, cables laid in troughs at a safe distance from the rails can be pulled in great lengths in a jiffy by simply attaching them to the trailer hook of an SUV and driving away.

Design bonus

With copper prices high, cable theft has become a major problem worldwide, not just for the metal value, but for travel disruption and danger. Railway cables are especially vulnerable since they are located along the tracks and highly visible. Also, unlike aluminum medium or low-voltage cables, they are typically all-copper conductors. Solutions are available to discourage theft, but usually require an added feature. The beauty of DuoTrack® is built-in at no cost. It is a good example of sound design making sure that crime doesn’t pay.
