Best of two worlds

By combining a halogen-free XLPE polyolefin insulation with a low-halogen Engineering Plastic (EP) outer sheath this high-performance power cable is both environmentally-friendly and extremely flexible, two important requirements for powering today’s hybrid EV cars.

Stability and pliability

Because of their proven ecological efficiency, hybrid cars are growing in popularity especially among suburban commuters. For maximum efficiency automobile manufacturers and harness makers like Yura corporation were looking for stable properties and easy installation.

Meeting strained power requirements

For the “high” voltage requirements (600V) of hybrid cars between the converter, inverter, generator and battery, carmakers require a reliable cable with heat and cold resistance (from -45°C to 150°C), resistance to flame propagation, minimal heat shrinkage, and high flexibility to facilitate installation, especially in complex harnesses.

Mutual development

The new cable was mutually developed by Nexans Korea and Yura, beginning in 2006. After initially determining pre-specifications, design changes were regularly made, especially in improving flexibility. Several cables were tested in actual Hybrid EV vehicles to find the best possible solution. Standardization was achieved by 2008, with reliability targets met in 2009. Then, a pilot cable was developed and tested in 2009 which finally obtained full approval by 2010. The new cable is being applied to the Hyundai YF-Sonata and the very similar Kia Lotze hybrid, both highly popular in South Korea and marketed globally under various names.

Other automotive applications

This innovative power cable solution will also have applications to upcoming Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs) and all-Electrical Vehicles (EVs), the next phase in eco-friendly transportation.
