Product Environmental Profile (PEP)

In 2010, Nexans France founded an association together with Schneider Electric, Atlantic, Legrand and a few others, along with their professional unions, to create a referential for the electrical, electronic and heating and cooling sectors, called the PEP ecopassport.

The PEP ecopassport is a prime tool for measuring and comparing the environmental impact of each product so that customers can choose a given product according to their corporate environmental quality manufacturing strategy.
The association defined a type III environmental declaration according to the ISO 14025 standard called the Product Environmental Profile (PEP) which provides quantified environmental data obtained from the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of a product.
Also known as Life Cycle Analysis, Ecobalance and Cradle-to-Grave Analysis this technique makes it possible to assess the environmental impacts associated with all stages of a product’s life: from raw material extraction through processing, materials processing, manufacture, distribution, use, repair and maintenance, and disposal or recycling. These indicators can be classified according to impact areas (local, regional, global) or environmental impact (air, soil or water).
These criteria heighten awareness of environmental concerns by:
- Establishing an inventory of relevant energy and material inputs and environmental releases
- Evaluating potential impacts
- Interpreting results to help customers make a more a more informed decision
PEP further fine-tunes the process by using:
- A recognized methodology based on ISO 14040s standards. The ISO 14 040 series gives the principle, the framework, the requirements and the guidelines for good LCA practices
- Product Category Rules according to the ISO 14025 standard, defined together with other electric and electronic companies
- LCA software called EIME, specific to electric and electronic products
Every PEP is verified by an independent verifier accredited by the PEP ecopassport program.
PEP is different from the eco-Label, and does not assess the environmental performance of a product. Rather, it allows customers to calculate the global impact of an electric installation, as well as to compare products, which require similar perimeters as well as shared assumptions concerning life cycle steps.
