Eco-production: producing and distributing better

Consuming less, producing better and reducing the environmental impact of our activities are just a few of the goals that fuel the Group’s innovation policy and industrial performance program. With Nexans Excellence Way, the Group has taken steps to ensure that all of its plants apply best practices in their operations.

Energy efficiency in our plants

Nexans has launched an energy efficiency plan for 16 plants totaling 50% of its consumption. This project aims to reduce 10% of the energy consumption on these pilot sites and then on all of the Group’s sites.

To achieve this goal, the Group improves its practices, production processes and equipment through two cross activity programs: Nexans Excellence Way, launched in 2009 to identify, standardize and spread best practices, and Nexans Excellence Technologies, introduced in 2011with the same goals in the areas of technical innovation and production processes.

In addition, consumption measurement campaigns and audits are used to check that utility networks are operating correctly and the most appropriate contracts applied, and to choose more efficient lighting, heating and air conditioning solutions. 

Reducing material consumption

By working on both routine performance management and targeted actions for specific sites that consume the highest amounts of raw materials, losses due to scrap are reduced. Production waste is monitored on a monthly basis.

All of the production sites have put in place a waste sorting program at source and wherever possible production waste is re-used directly by the site as a secondary raw material (PVC purge, for example)

Nexans also aims to limit excessive consumption by trying to find the perfect adaptation of our cables and connector assemblies to our customers’ actual needs. Design-to-cost combines marketing, development and industrialization to define a cable’s exact performance and helps save raw materials at an equivalent performance for customers. Downstream, the delivery of ready-to-install cables contributes to reducing scrap.

Finally, after doing everything we possibly can to reduce waste; our Group also offers a full product recycling solution.

Logistics optimization

In the area of logistics, efforts are concentrated on filling trucks, distribution and frequency of deliveries, the use of alternative means of transportation (waterway when possible – for example, the majority of dispatches to Antwerp are made by waterway).

An analysis of freight-related carbon emissions has been undertaken and pilot experiments have been run to reduce the frequency of deliveries to customers that accept to be involved. In addition Nexans aims to reinforce its program to collect and reuse its wooden cable drums. Already, over 280,000 of the drums that Nexans uses to dispatch electrical cables have been collected and reused between one to five times over the past years. These drums represent more than 35% of yearly total drums used worldwide by Nexans.
