Sensor in the grid

Federal research project “Sensors in the Grid” successfully completed

The research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) to which Nexans Power Accessories has contributed for three years is promising interesting results – both from laboratory experiments and first field tests. Grid and cable condition evaluation through smart cable accessories is no longer pure theory, but has become a procedure tested and verified in practice. The project and the installations were carried out in a model region in the city of Leverkusen, Germany.

The project shall help to develop new and cost efficient ways to analyse the condition of distribution grids and connected facilities. The use of broadband communication networks allows for a permanent monitoring of the grid condition while helping to determine error sources in facilities and power grids at the same time. It is possible to record the condition of cables, such as ageing or partial discharge, without complex measuring equipment. As part of this joint project, Nexans Power Accessories has made its contribution in the field of MV sensor technology and smart connection solutions creating a unique solution of monitoring stress resistance of machinery and equipment in organically evolved power grids.
